British To Begin Electron Spin Study

A British government-funded project that begins next month might lead to a better understanding of such illnesses as [more] heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

During the four-year, $1.6 million (850,000 pound) project, a team of scientists, engineers and mathematicians at the University of Bath will undertake a fundamental revision of electron spin resonance imaging, a technique for body scanning.

The team says it hopes electron spin resonance imaging will eventually take a three-dimensional "snapshot" image of the chemical state of organs such as the heart. That, the researchers said, would be an important advance, and could lead to new treatments for serious illnesses.

The Bath team will collaborate with experts at the University of the West of England and Cardiff Medical School to develop the new technologies.

The project is funded by Britain's Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.
