China Opens Confucius Institute In Hanover

The eighth Confucius Institute in Germany was opened in the northern city of Hanover on Tuesday.

China paid 100,000 dollars towards the establishment of the [more] institute, which is located in the city's Chinese Centre.

Lutz Stratmann, the Christian Democrat interior minister of the state of Lower Saxony, where Hanover is located, opened the new cultural institute.

"I am convinced that this institute will play an important role as an anchor between our two countries," Stratmann said.

The partner of the institute is Tongji University in Shanghai.

"All institutes of higher learning in Lower Saxony enjoy extensive contacts with China," Stratmann said.

The 3,000 Chinese studying in Lower Saxony make up the largest group of foreign students in the state. In all, 25,000 Chinese are registered as students at German universities.
