U.S. weather officials predicted a severe fire season for 2007, one year after the worst fire season in half a [more] century.
USA Today reported on the predictions, which have experts worrying particularly about Southeastern U.S. states such as Alabama, Georgia and Florida, where extreme drought has already contributed to substantial fires.
A group of weather experts meeting in Denver predicted that Southern California, much of which has been scorched in recent years, is in for another hazardous season.
USA Today reported that factors contributing to these predictions are extreme summer heat, dead forests due to beetle infestations and uncertain midsummer storm patterns.
In 2006, the worst fire season in 50 years, an estimated 9.9 million acres were destroyed.
