The FDA has said that the abortion pill, RU-486, was not linked to the death of a woman who had taken it. Regulators said the second death is still being looked into and no decision has yet been taken on that one. [more]
Both deaths were reported in March, 2006. Regulators said it appears the patient in the second death had an infection.
RU-486 (Mifeprex or Mifepristone) is a drug used for the termination of a pregnancy which is less than 49 days' old. The patient is first given RU-486 and then Misoprostol a two days later.
Four other women in California had previously died after taking the abortion pill, but RU-486 was not proved to be the cause.
Many people have called for the drug to be banned as a result of these deaths.
