The FDA Offers Pharmaceutical Firms A Deal The U.S. Food and Drug Administration reportedly wants to make pharmaceutical firms pay for vetting their TV ads in [more] exchange for speedier reviews.

The fees, the first of their kind, would help pay for new FDA staff to review the industry's television ads, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The newspaper said its sources reported the agreement would be in tandem with a separate, 5-year pact setting new user fees to be paid by drug makers to the FDA when the agency reviews their applications to market new medicines.

The deals will not become final until the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Congress approves them, the Journal noted. Once that occurs, both agreements would be effective Oct. 1, 2007 -- the start of the government's next fiscal year.
