The battle of formats has been raging on for a while, although mostly in the form of a battle of statements. Up until now, the only thing that really happened is that some organizations (movie studios, game developers, hardware manufacturers, etc.) declared their support for[more] one of the two future DVD formats: The HD-DVD from Toshiba, or the Blu-ray from Sony.
And the latest move in this ongoing war comes from MGM, who announced yesterday that it would support the new high definition Blu-ray Disc format.
"MGM's focus has always been to provide movie lovers complete access to the world's largest modern film library in the most technologically advanced formats," commented Harry Sloan, Chairman and CEO of MGM Studios. "Adopting this new Blu-ray technology, with its expanded storage capacity and increased interactive capabilities, allows us to continue to provide our customers with the best movie viewing experience available."
However, unlike Warner Bros' similar announcement from last month, this could hardly be called a surprise move, since the studio was bought in April by an investor group including private equity firms Providence Equity Partners and Texas Pacific Group, as well as Sony and Comcast Corp.
So, yet another major player joins the already increasing camp of Blu-ray's supporters, and the list of HD-DVD allies seems to be growing thin. But the ultimate outcome...is yet unknnown.
