In an appeal for Internet and communications unity, Sun Microsystems today invited technology companies worldwide to help eliminate the growing global digital divide by creating opportunities for [more] everyone to connect with -- and participate in -- the global network. Sun issued its invitation at the United Nations' World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) in Tunis, Tunisia.
Sun is a strong supporter of the U.N. summit, and its involvement is the latest step in Sun's "Share the Opportunity" initiative, a global effort to promote participation in social change and eradicate the digital divide. It also continues the company's involvement with the U.N. as the U.N. works toward achieving its Millennium Development Goals.
At the summit, John Gage, Chief Researcher at Sun and a member of the United Nations Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) Task Force, will participate in a panel discussion titled, "The Internet of Things.""As a driving force behind the network and one of the leading providers of connectivity, Sun has a responsibility to help our neighbors around the world harness the power of the network," said Gage.
"Today, we are working to move beyond connectivity to participation, to enable a new generation to use ubiquitous global access to build a new future for themselves, their families and their communities."
This is a very interesting and noteworthy appeal from Sun, although it does sound a little like the "I want world peace and prosperity" speech from a beauty pageant.
