EU See the Rejection of XXX domain As a US Political Influence  After ICANN rejected the approval of the XXX domain, the European Commission has accused US of political intervention. ICANN, which is US authority, turned down the XXX domain with by nine votes to five, in spite of the repeated attempts lead by the [more] Florida-based company proposing the name, ICM Registry Inc., which argued this initiative would help the industry better organize and eventually clean up its act because those using the domain would have to adhere to rules which forbid spamming and malicious programming.

The European Commission reacted quickly and, according to Reuters, Martin Selmayr, spokesman for EU Information Society and Media Commissioner, Viviane Reding., said that the decision underscored the need to make ICANN independent quickly, following unsuccessful demands last year by a group of countries including the EU to make ICANN fully independent. "We see here a first clear case of political interference in ICANN," said Selmayr.

Martin Selmayr believes that responsible for political interference is the U.S. Department of Commerce, the authority who needs to approve any changes proposed by ICANN.
According to ICANN, the exact details of how the board members voted will only be unveiled later this month.
