The South Korean electronics manufacturer Samsung has recently announced the launch for 2007 of the largest liquid crystal display screen (LCD) in the world, with a diagonal of 70 inches (1.78 meters).[more]
Until now, the record in this area was detained by Sharp’s LCD, which has a diagonal reaching 65 inches (1.65 meters).
The new device will be unveiled at the International Meeting on Information Displays (IMID) 2006, in Daegu, Korea.
Samsung's latest LCD panel has a 1080p resolution a conical viewing angle of 180 degrees and video signal of 120Hz.
"Our new 70-inch LCD is not only significantly larger, but also sets a new benchmark of excellence in terms of video image reproduction, viewing angle and image quality. We've designed it to dramatically enhance the large screen LCD TV user's viewing experience." (Kim Sang-Soo, Executive Vice President, Samsung Electronics).
Samsung’s vice-President Kim Sang-soo said with the development Samsung Electronics has taken the lead in the scramble for super-size LCD TVs. "This will be the next most revolutionary release following the emergence of the 40-inch LCDs,” he added.
Samsung specified that its new LCD screen will enter production sometime in the first quarter of 2007 and that the technology used in building it will be the basis for the next generation of large LCDs.
Moreover, Samsung officials have stated that their new invention boasts with a refresh rate of not less than 120 Hz, which is almost double than what the current large LCD screens posses (Sharp’s refresh rate is only 65 Hz). This will allow the next generation LCDs to output superior quality high-definition images.
Samsung and Sony are partners against Sharp in the battle for supremacy: each of the two sides have claimed the crown of the winner by now alternatively. Their fight is mainly driven by a financial purpose: the demand for LCD screens has registered a continuous increase lately.
Still, the biggest screens available on the market today are the plasma screens. The Goliath of plasma devices is a screen which reaches 103 inches (2.61 meters) in diagonal.
