IBM And Lenovo Order Massive Notebook Recall IBM and Lenovo on Thursday issued a worldwide recall for more than 500,000 ThinkPad laptops, saying that their Sony-made batteries were a fire hazard.

The voluntary [more] recall order came a little over a month after Apple Computer recalled 1.8 million batteries and Dell recalled 4.1 million batteries due to similar problems.

The recall order said that at least one battery had burst into flames and advised Thinkpad owners to stop using them immediately.

The laptop fire occurred as a customer boarded an airliner and a fire extinguisher had to be used to put it out, Lenovo said in a statement.

The batteries involved were used in T Series, R Series and X Series ThinkPad PCs made between February 2005 and September 2006, according to the statement from Lenovo, IBM and the Consumer Product Safety Commission

The China-based Lenovo bought IBM's PC business in May 2005 to catapult it into the world's third-largest personal-computer maker.
