A Silicon Valley company has come up with the ultimate device for car geeks, an auto-based wi-fi system that allows any laptops within 30 metres to connect to the [more] internet.

The Autonet Mobile Unit will be priced at 399 dollars with a 49- dollar monthly service charge and will use cellular technology to connect to a high-speed data service, according to the San Francisco Chronicle Tuesday.

The New York Times reported that the company is set to announce a partnership with Avis that will allow automobile renters to rent the units for an extra 11 dollars a day.

While high-speed internet services have become widely available, they usually require special cards or modems. The advantage of Autonet Mobile is that more than one person can enjoy the Wi-Fi access.

"We live in a car-centric society, and our Autonet Mobile Service is directly addressing the communications needs of today's drivers and passengers," said Sterling Pratz, chief executive of Autonet Mobile. "We are putting the connected lifestyle in the car with an easy-to-use service for executives and families on the go."
