Nintendo's hit Wii gaming console is continuing its march to the top of the video-game class, selling as many units in February as both of its main rivals put together, according [more] to figures released Friday.
Nintendo sold 355,000 units during the month, with Microsoft selling 228,000 of its Xbox 360 units, and Sony coming in third place with just 127,000 of its PlayStation 3 consoles, according to research firm NPD Group.
Nintendo's system has less powerful processors than its rivals but is dominating the market thanks to its innovative motion-sensing control system that allows users to play games with their body movement.
In total, Microsoft has sold 5.1 million of its consoles, while both Nintendo and Sony have yet to reach the 2-million mark for either of their gaming machines. Microsoft's console hit the market more than a year ahead of those of Nintendo and Sony.
The only game system that sold more units in February than the Wii was the portable Nintendo DS, with sell-through of 485,000 units.
"We're gratified that the explosive appeal of Wii, in terms of both new players and new ways to play, has created unprecedented demand, substantially beyond supply," said Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America.
Fils-Aime said the company would have sold many more units had they been available.
"We also understand that there are hundreds of thousands of consumers still waiting to get their hands on the system so we continue to both ship more units to retail every week and work non-stop to build capacity."
