The race of gaming consoles is heating up again. After
Microsoft launched last month Xbox 360 Elite with 120 GB, Sony is hinting about
a new version of its PS3 console. Speaking with Bloomberg, Satoshi Fukuoka, a Sony Computer
Entertainment Inc. [more] spokesman in Tokyo,
confirmed a new version of PS3, but he didn’t provide any other details.
According to a filling at the FCC (Federal Communications
Commission) which was made in early March, Sony also plans to change PS3’s
Bluetooth module.
Sony’s filling, dated March 2, 2007, and signed by Hitoshi
Tanabe, from the Product Quality Office, refers to “a reverse F Antenna” which
is due to be added to the Bluetooth module. The filling speaks about an
“original model” codenamed CECHA 01 and about “an addition of model” codenamed
CECHE 01, which are to be separated “by the difference of the capacity of the
hard drive”.
A few days ago Sony has officially stopped the sale of the
20GB PlayStation 3 in United
States and is currently focusing only on the
more expensive model, with the 60GB HDD.
Also the 60 GB version was the only one launched in PAL
territories.
According to Sony’s officials the 20 GB version will remain
on sale only in Japan.
For the moment, in terms of sales, Sony is lagging behind its competitors,
Microsoft and Nintendo.
