Acer, the Taiwanese company that had acquired former US rival
Gateway in 2007, is now officially in front of Dell, at least
concerning the number of laptops sold worldwide.[more]
According to research firm
DisplaySearch,
after completing the acquisition of Gateway last fall, Acer has managed
to sell in the last quarter of 2007 more laptops than its Texas-based
competitor Dell. Current leader HP is still the king, with more than
6.66 million notebooks sold in Q4, but Acer surpassed Dell with 5.25
million laptops sold, compared to Dell's 4.64 million.
Translated in market share, this means that HP holds 20 percent, Acer
16 percent and Dell 14 percent. Toshiba remained on a constant fourth
place, with 2.86 million portable notebooks shipped, while Lenovo,
Fujitsu-Siemens and Asus share the 5th, 6th and 7th place respectively.
Apple is on the 8th, with 1.34 million MacBooks sold.
"Historically, results from the fourth quarter of the year show the
influence of Christmas season purchases of notebook PCs by consumers,
as they continue to transition away from desktop PCs towards notebook
PCs. But as our data shows, while a few brands managed to surpass the
notebook market’s amazing 41 % Y/Y unit growth, most brands had
difficulty achieving that level of growth. While Acer's brand outpaced
the market, when their Gateway and Packard Bell acquisitions are
factored into the equation, the results are less positive, indicating
that their acquisitions were on a downward trend," said John Jacobs,
Director of Notebook Market Research at DisplaySearch.
Looking at 2008, DisplaySearch expects notebook PC shipments
to continue to grow, with total notebook PC shipments exceeding 135M
units for the year.
