NPD figures show Xbox 360 slump, PS3 rise, Wii domainance

NPD figures show Xbox 360 slump, PS3 rise, Wii domainance The latest sales figures from NPD Group show that the Xbox 360 is continuing its decline (in terms of hardware sales) and that the PlayStation 3's rebound is stronger than ever.

Last month it was the second month in a row when Sony's console beat Microsoft's console in terms of sales. The Redmond behemoth had actually admitted defeat in the US even before NPD's data came out, but now everything is official. Of course, Nintendo is still on top of the food chain, with both DS and Wii registering stellar sales on the North American continent.

Here are the numbers:

  1. DS: 587.6K 336.6K (up 134%)
  2. Wii: 432K 158K (up 58%)
  3. PS2: 351.8K 87.8K (up 33%)
  4. PS3: 280.8K 11.8K (up 4%)
  5. Xbox 360: 254.6K 24.6K (up 11%)
  6. PSP: 243.1K 13.1K (up 6%)

February sales for both gaming hardware and software have registered an astounding growth, reaching $1.33 billion- a record for the second month of the year, when few games are launched. Hardware sales have also exceeded expectations, with more than $480 million worth of consoles and accessories sold (an 19 percent increase compared to last year).

In terms of software sales however, the Xbox 360 remained without rival, no less than 5 games for Microsoft's console dominating the top 10 in February. Here's the chart:

  1. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (Xbox 360) – 296.2K
  2. Devil May Cry 4 (Xbox 360) – 295.2K
  3. Wii Play w/remote (Wii) – 289.7K
  4. Devil May Cry 4 (PS3) – 233.5K
  5. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (Wii) – 222.9K
  6. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (DS) – 205.6K
  7. Lost Odyssey (Xbox 360) – 203.6K
  8. Turok (Xbox 360) – 197.7K
  9. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (PS2) – 183.8K
  10. Rock Band (Xbox 360) – 161.8K

Microsoft said that poor sales for Xbox 360 are to be blamed on supply shortages, but added that more consoles will be added to stores' shelves by the end of April.
